How I became a Freelancer
In 2018, I began searching for ways to work from home. At the time, I had a five-year-old starting school full-time and an almost one-year-old. Things had become hectic since my five-year-old did not have extended afterschool care. I was trying to make it work, but it all became too much for me to handle and took a toll on my mental health. My work environment was no longer healthy, and I was trying to balance too much as a mom and an employee.
Since 2016, I had already been running a blog called “Busybrilliantmom,” so I was a bit familiar with the online space. That’s how I came across virtual assisting, and Lauren Golden from Live Free Mama was the first person who inspired me to become a virtual assistant. I started to deep dive into any information I could find and ended up purchasing one of the few courses available to become a virtual assistant.
I set up my business, albeit with a few bumps in the road, and kept pushing forward. In February of 2019, I quit my job and started working on my business. In May of that year, I launched Desk On The Run and landed two clients the same month. I started working part-time at school in July. During my commutes, I would listen to podcasts, and my favorites were “The Live Free Podcast” by Micala Quinn and “Pep Talks for Side Hustlers.” I was so motivated and inspired that things just fell into place. In September of 2020 (one year and four months later), I became a full-time freelancer!
In the summer of 2021, I took another pivotal course to offer more support than just virtual assisting, the Digital Business Bootcamp. I also completed a Mastermind, and it was the second year in a row that I spent my summers with my family in the Dominican Republic. None of this would have been possible had I not listened to what my mind, body, and soul needed: freedom & flexibility. I am now a Digital Business Manager, offering more strategic technical support and implementation.
Since then, in collaboration with Busy Brilliant Mom, I have launched “Latina Mom Meetups.” These meetups provide a space for moms in my area to gather and discuss opportunities and resources to help them find their own balance. No mother should feel lonely while transitioning in and out of the workplace and striving to be the best mother she can be. I’m so proud how everything has come full circle. If you have any questions feel free to email me.
